Mitch Elend

Mitchell Elend is with the School of Oceanography’s Hydrothermal Working Group at the University of Washington. He works with the video and still imagery collected by submersibles and remotely operated vehicles. His past works include image mosaics of hydrothermal vent structures, one of the most noted of which is a 139-image composite picture of “Faulty Towers,” a hydrothermal vent complex in Mothra Field. Mitch is also interested in mapping the seafloor. On this cruise he hopes to learn how to conduct seafloor surveys using multibeam sonar systems on the new autonomous vehicle Sentry and on the R/V Thompson.
